LIVING A FULLER, MORE ACTIVE LIFE

The HeartMate 3™ Left Ventricular Assist Device, or LVAD, can assist your heart in pumping blood throughout your body. Designed with Full MagLev™ flow technology, the HeartMate 3 LVAD helps protect the blood as it flows through the pump.

Because it is designed to restore blood flow throughout the body, an LVAD may help patients with heart failure:

  • Breathe more easily and feel less fatigued
  • Improve organ function
  • Generally feel more energetic and able to resume some activities that they were unable to do prior to receiving the device

"My goal was to lead an active life again. Thanks to my doctors and Heartmate 3, I have met that goal. I’m able to do the things I love again, like hiking, riding my bike, and doing volunteer work."

—Astrid, Heartmate 3 LVAD recipient*

RETURN TO AN ACTIVE LIFE

Many HeartMate 3 LVAD patients find that they can get back to doing the things they love, including:

  • Playing golf
  • Dancing
  • Walking
  • Bicycling
  • Fishing
  • Gardening
  • Traveling
  • Enjoying family time

Please note that you cannot swim, play water sports or engage in contact sports because some parts of the HeartMate 3 device are located outside of your body.

COMPLICATIONS AND RISKS

It is important that you understand the risks of LVAD implantation. An LVAD should not be used in patients who cannot tolerate or are allergic to anticoagulation therapy.

Consult your doctor about all possible benefits and risks of an LVAD.

See important safety information.

HOW THE HEARTMATE 3™ LVAD WORKS

The HeartMate 3™ Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) is designed to supplement the pumping function of the heart. It is a small, implantable device that is placed in your chest by a cardiac surgeon and has parts that also exist outside of your body.

The device attaches to your left ventricle and aorta (the main artery that carries oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the entire body). An external, wearable system includes a small controller and two batteries and is attached by an external driveline. You can wear the system either under or on top of your clothing.

"I felt very positive about going ahead with the HeartMate 3 LVAD implant, and the more I learned about it, the more positive I became. My family and I noticed a big improvement in my energy just a few weeks after I received HeartMate 3."

—Harald, HeartMate 3 LVAD recipient.*

HOW IS THE HEARTMATE 3™ LVAD USED?

The HeartMate 3 LVAD is indicated for providing short-and long-term mechanical circulatory support (e.g., as bridge to transplant or myocardial recovery, or destination therapy) in patients with advanced refractory left ventricular heart failure.

IS THE HEARTMATE 3 LVAD AN ARTIFICIAL HEART?

No. The HeartMate 3 LVAD is not an artificial heart, nor is it a heart replacement. Your native heart is not removed. The device attaches to your heart and is designed to assist—or take over—the pumping function of your left ventricle, the main pumping chamber of the heart.

HOW LONG DOES A BATTERY CHARGE LAST?

The device has rechargeable batteries that offer up to 17 hours of uninterrupted support. It also comes with a Mobile Power Unit (MPU) that can be plugged into an electrical socket to provide power while you are indoors, at rest or asleep. Small and light, the unit is designed to be extremely durable.

WHAT HAPPENS IF HEARTMATE 3 LVAD FAILS?

The HeartMate 3 LVAD is designed to work for a long time. The controller is always checking that the system is properly operating. It will let you know if there is a problem, and you will learn what to look for as well. The system will be checked during your regular medical visits.

WHAT ABOUT A POWER OUTAGE?

Having extra batteries charged and ready will keep you prepared for a power outage. The Mobile Power Unit (MPU) is portable, to provide greater flexibility in connecting your HeartMate 3 system. When you leave the hospital, your local power company will be told of your medical device. This is a precaution in the event of a power outage. If an outage occurs, you would be placed on a high-priority list to have your power restored.
