HOW THE CARDIOMEMS HF SYSTEM WORKS

The CardioMEMS™ HF system measures your pulmonary artery pressure and heart rate through a sensor that is implanted in your pulmonary artery (the blood vessel that moves blood from your heart to your lungs). Once the device is implanted, you take daily pressure readings from the comfort of your home and wirelessly transmit the data to your doctor for continuous monitoring.

The sensor is small and does not require any batteries or wires. You will not feel it, and it will not interfere with your daily activities or other implanted devices such as a pacemaker or defibrillator.

The system includes an at-home electronics unit that you use to take the daily measurements. This is a simple and painless process that takes under a minute each day.

Staying Connected with the MyCardioMEMS App

Stay engaged in your care by using the myCardioMEMS™ app. The app allows you to see what days you uploaded readings and you can get reminders to take your heart failure medication. Your care team can also send you messages directly through the app about your readings and if you need to adjust your care plan. All of this can be done from the comfort of your home and without needing to go into the clinic.

If you have a pulmonary artery (PA) pressure monitoring sensor, taking PA pressure readings will now be part of your daily routine. Your CardioMEMS™ HF System comes with the equipment you need, including a quick-start guide that will lead you through the setup process. Be sure to follow any instructions your doctor gives you.

Instructions for using your CardioMEMS HF System

SYSTEM UNIT AND ANTENNA

The system is portable, but most patients set it up in their bedroom for maximum efficiency. Electric blankets and waterbeds can cause interference with the system. If you have either an electric blanket or a waterbed, you may want to take your reading in another room.

The system includes:

  • Antenna: A paddle-shaped antenna inside your pillow, to make it easier and more comfortable for you to take readings.
  • Patient Electronics System: Reads the pressure measurement from your sensor wirelessly. For instructions on setting up the system, refer to the CardioMEMS Patient Electronics System guide that was included with the system.

Why Would I Use A Pulmonary Artery (PA) Pressure Monitoring System?

From your home unit, your sensor information is sent wirelessly to your doctor so they can proactively assess your condition and reduce your chances of developing new symptoms or going to the hospital.

How Often Do I Need To Use The CardioMEMS HF System?

Can I Have A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scan With My PA Sensor?

You can have an MRI scan under certain conditions. Talk with the doctor ordering your MRI scan to ensure that he or she knows that you have a CardioMEMS PA sensor.

Can I Pass Through Airport Security Or Anti-Theft Systems With My PA Sensor?

Yes; your sensor will not alert or be affected by airport security or anti-theft systems that require you to pass through a metal detector or scanning machine.

Will My PA Sensor Interfere With My Pacemaker Or Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)?

No; if you have a pacemaker or ICD, your PA sensor will not interfere with those devices, even when you are taking a reading.

Are There Risks With the Implantation of a PA Sensor?

The CardioMEMS HF System is not indicated for patients who are unable to take dual antiplatelet or anticoagulants for one month after the implantation of the PA sensor.

Although complications are very rare, risks associated with the implantation of a PA sensor include:

  • Arrhythmias
  • Bleeding
  • Death
  • Device embolization
  • Hematoma
  • Infection
  • Myocardial infarction
  • Stroke
  • Thrombus
  • Transient ischemic attack

Indications and Usage: The CardioMEMS™ HF System is indicated for wirelessly measuring and monitoring pulmonary artery (PA) pressure and heart rate in New York Heart Association (NYHA) Class III heart failure patients who have been hospitalized for heart failure in the previous year.
