Abbott held a comprehensive 2-day heart failure program in March of 2021. The following videos are recordings of the program sessions, and are intended for heart failure clinicians—including nurse practitioners, ventricular assist device (VAD) coordinators, nurses, social workers and other providers interested in heart failure education.

Program Description

This state-of-the-art heart failure program was designed to enhance knowledge of options for patients with heart failure and the management and support of these patients, and will provide educational content for those new to heart failure devices and will challenge experienced clinicians.

Program Objectives

  • Review key indicators in assessing the progression of heart failure while gaining insights on the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach to management.
  • Utilize workflow strategies and remote care for successful implementation of the CardioMEMS™ HF System in your practice.
  • Understand the phased approach to pulmonary artery pressure monitoring to optimize patient management.
  • Identify current best practices for preoperative, postoperative and discharge education of mechanical circulatory support patients.
  • Demonstrate understanding of HeartMate™ Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) pump parameters, differences and clinical correlations.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the VAD evaluation process and post-discharge considerations for the Heartmate 3™ Left Ventricular Assist System (LVAS) patient, from a social worker perspective.

General Sessions

State of the Union – Heart Failure

Beth Davidson, DNP, presents the important issues facing healthcare providers who manage heart failure patients and opportunities for improving the patient’s heart failure journey.

The Principles of Palliative Care

Ann Laramee, NP, discusses principles of palliative care including how to help patients affirm life and regard dying as a normal process.

Lessons Learned: “Bad Candidate,” Is There Such a Thing?

Nicole Wyse, LISW-S, discusses the challenges heart failure teams encounter with the evaluation process for potential candidates for advanced heart failure devices.

Heart Failure Device Support Groups

Edward Mahoney, PhD, presents on topics from heart failure support groups, including enhanced quality of life, improved communication with healthcare providers and a greater understanding of heart disease. Learn all about the key elements incorporated into a successful support group.

A Patient’s Perspective

Phil Adamson, MD, interviews Ashley Greiner, a CardioMEMS HF System patient, on her journey with heart failure and this technology.

Racial Disparities in Heart Failure Management

Natalie Pierson, MSN, RN, discusses how racial disparities can be identified and combated in the management of heart failure patients.

Lessons Learned: Real-world Experience

Nicole Wyse, LISW-S, presents on current best practices and proposed solutions that may contribute to patient quality of life will be discussed.

Heart Failure Sessions

CardioMEMS HF System: An Essential and Safe Tool in Managing Heart Failure

Lisa Rathman, CNP, demonstrates the impact of the CardioMEMS HF System in the management of heart failure patients by highlighting trial data and clinical experience.

Managing Patients with WHO Group 2 Pulmonary Hypertension

Gretchen Foley, PA-C, shows how pulmonary artery pressure monitoring can provide essential insight for complex patients with WHO Group 2 pulmonary hypertension.

The Vital Role of CardioMEMS HF System in the Remote Management of Heart Failure Patients

Meg Fraser, DNP, ANP-C, presents how the CardioMEMS HF System plays a vital role in the remote management of heart failure patients.

Advanced Heart Failure Sessions

HeartMate 3 LVAD Patient Management Case Studies

Christina Cheyne, RN, explores how a center has used their comprehensive LVAD experiences and data to form their best practice protocols in the management of the HeartMate 3 LVAD patient population.

Integrating HeartMate Touch Communication System into Your LVAD Program

As pump technology improves, the systems to monitor and run the pump must also improve. Justin Hamm, RN, explains how one center has adopted the use of the new HeartMate Touch™ monitors into their program.

HeartMate 3 LVAS: Patient and Caregiver Education

Tim Robbins, RN, leads a session that explores creative ways to reinforce knowledge retention for patients and caregivers while simultaneously maximizing the training time for the education team.

Understanding Pulsatility Index

Understanding the cardiac pump and how it works is important to know when caring for the HeartMate 3 LVAD patient. Kevin Guffey, RN, walks through the pump parameters and pulse index to show how to clinically correlate with patient care.

Troubleshooting: LVAS Case Studies

Developing your HeartMate 3 LVAS troubleshooting skills takes practice. During this session, Tim Robbins, RN uses case studies to walk through different scenarios you may encounter when caring for HeartMate 3 LVAS patients.

The Concept and Utilization of TeleVAD

As a society we are learning more about incorporating the “virtual” world into our daily practice, and this is no different for our LVAD patients. Sara Dick, RN, discusses concepts of “Tele-VAD” visits for the HeartMate 3 LVAS patient.
