HOW MONITORING PA PRESSURE HELPS HEART FAILURE PATIENTS

In many cases, feeling ill is the first sign that your heart failure treatment may not be working. Now, your doctor has a proactive way of keeping a closer eye on your treatment progress. By monitoring pressure inside your pulmonary artery (the blood vessel that moves blood from your heart to your lungs), your doctor can know when to make changes to your treatment, which may reduce the need for you to go to the hospital. Clinical studies show that patients whose doctors used a PA pressure sensor to manage heart failure actually had fewer hospitalizations and improved quality of life.1,2

HOW IT WORKS

A PA pressure monitoring system uses a sensor to measure your pulmonary artery pressure and heart rate. The sensor is no larger than the size of a dime, with two thin loops at each end. The sensor is implanted in your pulmonary artery. It does not require any batteries or wires. You will not feel it, and it will not interfere with your daily activities or other devices such as a pacemaker or defibrillator. The system comes with an electronics unit that you use to take daily measurements and send them wirelessly to your doctor.

BENEFITS OF PA PRESSURE MONITORING
  • Your doctor may be able to detect worsening heart failure before you feel symptoms.
  • Your chances of hospitalization may be reduced because your doctor may be able to use the information to adjust your medications before you feel sick.
RISKS OF PA PRESSURE MONITORING

As with any medical procedure, there are risks associated with the implantation of a PA sensor, although complications are very rare. Some of the risks associated with the implantation of the CardioMEMS™ HF System PA sensor include:

  • Arrhythmias
  • Bleeding
  • Death
  • Device embolization
  • Hematoma
  • Infection
  • Myocardial infarction
  • Stroke
  • Thrombus
  • Transient ischemic attack
